1995-1998: University of Wyoming (Laramie, Wyo.). Relevant courses included writing classes in journalism and English, design courses for both newspapers and Web pages, editing courses, photography, and interpersonal communication. Served as editor of campus paper, The Branding Iron during 1998-99 school year.
1998-2001: University of Wyoming Graduate School (Laramie, Wyo.). Graduate assistant in Communication and Mass Media. Thesis centered on public journalism. I also taught Reporting and Newswriting lab sections.
Professional Experience
August 2011 to present: Communication Coordinator, American Numismatic Association (Colorado Springs, CO). Managed the organization's social media platforms, created content for the organization's web sites, wrote and edited press releases, shot and edited video of association events, and performed other marketing tasks as assigned.
August 2005 to July 2011: Assistant Professor, Opinion Editor and News Editor, Missouri School of Journalism (Columbia, Mo.). Worked with student designers and copy editors in the production of ColumbiaMissourian.com, the daily opinion section, the daily Missourian newspaper, the Weekend Missourian news magazine, the children's publication MiniMo and special sections. Other duties include: Teaching courses in design and editing, guest lectures on social media, advisor for a Freshman Interest Group and special projects, including re-launch of the Web site, transformation to online-first publication and leading community conversations team.
January 2001 to July 2005: Night Editor, Wyoming Tribune-Eagle (Cheyenne, Wyo.). Duties included overseeing editing and design of daily newspaper and special sections, scheduling, wire editing, and managing a staff of six editors on the design and copy desk.
January 2003 to May 2003 and January 2004 to May 2004: Adjunct lecturer, University of Wyoming (Laramie, Wyo.). Taught the Reporting and Newswriting course, which is the university's beginning journalism class, during the spring semesters. Taught the general lecture section for communications majors and the lab section for journalism majors.
August 2002 to December 2002: Adjunct instructor, Laramie County Community College (Cheyenne, Wyo.). Taught English 1001, a course for students lacking in the basics of writing.
August 1998 to January 2001 and May 1995 to August 1997: Sports Writer/Copy Editor, Laramie Daily Boomerang (Laramie, Wyo.). Daily tasks included covering University of Wyoming, Laramie High School and community sporting events, copy editing, page design and photography. Other projects included helping redesign the newspaper, taking news assignments, news photography, and editing special sections.
Other skills
Strong Internet skills, including HTML, CSS and social networking. Well-versed in most publishing software: InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Quark, iMovie, iWeb, Garage Band. Also have experience in editing audio and video.
Honors
Associated Press Public Service Award for 2005 for Shapin' Up with Sherlock health and fitness series. Second place, best daily headlines, National Newspaper Association contest.
